This page is all about the second new Saturn I bought in May 2003 for my wife and daughter. It was traded in for a much cooler car in October 2005.
You'll have to go back to the original Saturn page for the complete explanation of why I bought a new car in the first place. It's worth a good read, so have at it.
We decided to upgrade to a newer and better model Saturn. Why? 0% interest and a rare "at dealer invoice" sale by Saturn prompted us to move up. I like some features a lot on the new car (fog lights, sunroof, sport suspension) but I really hate the chrome wheels. And the sport suspension is a bit too firm - too much road feel comes up through the power steering system. Oh well. It'll get traded in again in a few years, so who cares. It drives nice and it's reliable. And my wife likes it. It's The Family Car. Yay.
The pictures here were taken down in Ocean Shores, WA where they let you drive on the beach. We were down there on vacation and out on the beach with the camera, so I figured, "hey, why not get some pics of the car?" - pretty much any car looks much cooler on the beach than in your driveway...
In the "guilty pleasure" category, I gotta admit that for a family hauler, this car is fun to drive. I can make the tires howl in pain the way I like to corner in the car, and it handles it all very respectably and without drama. Maybe my drama-free experience with these new cars will inspire me to fix more of the nagging little issues on my project cars. After all, the goal of this car was to be able to do more fun work on my cars and enjoy them right?
Saturn Speed Record
Have you ever noticed that once you own a particular car, you end up noticing anything that has to do with your car - whether you want to or not. I actually watch all the Saturn commercials and I see every one out on the road. I even spotted a blurb in (of all places) Car Craft about a specially prepped Saturn Ion taking the new class record in G/Blown Fuel Altered at Bonneville. The shocking parts were the engine was actually something resembling what the factory produces and that they shattered the record by 30mph. Maybe they're going to do something cool with the new Ion coupe after all. A little performance never hurt, right? :-)
This was Car #21. My second new car, my first time upgrading to a "newer and better" model. My first time a salesman called me to tell me about a good deal and actually sold me a car. My first car with nice options like power sunroof, heated mirrors, fog lights, and a nice sport suspension.
